6 Amazing tips for picking your wedding photographer!
Congratulations on your engagement this guide will help prepare you by helping to clarify your vision and aligning it with a competent photographer.
First things first if you don’t think we see the irony of being a photographer and giving recommendations on how to choose one we absolutely do. 😄 It hasn’t been lost by us but we think even more so our experience with other photographers and being in the industry will be able to give you a bit more insight into this world.
Catherine and I undoubtedly will have great moments with so many couples and we are grateful for that but we also understand that we are not the photographers for everyone whether the reason be style or budget.
There are a few essential things to consider when hiring a photographer. One of the first things you should consider is what style of photography resonates with you the most.
Let’s start with identifying your style.

Tip #1
Style
-
Photojournalistic is basically a “fly on the wall” approach to wedding photography. This style is the most detached, your photographer is able to capture dynamic moments without intervening with the scene or overly posing. Photojournalistic is perfect for people more introverted. Couples who don’t want a lot of fuss and aren’t particular about how they want to be posed love this style. The photojournalistic approach offers the least invasive form of wedding photography.
-
This style of photography is what you envision when you think of a traditional wedding. Classic wedding photography is usually more formal. The photographer’s are usually traditionalist. When you look at a traditional wedding album you expect to see certain images and you definitely will, they stand the test of time and the style resonates with most people.
-
When do you think of editorial think of editing! The editorial approach feels more like a film director. They know what they want to see and they know how to implement it throughout every image. It’s much more hands-on guided outcome.
-
When it comes to a lifestyle photographer they’re sort of a blend between editorial and photojournalistic they know how to recognize a moment and capture it quietly but at the same time they aren’t opposed to rubbing two sticks together to make a fire, they know how and when to blend in and out of both worlds.
-
Creative wedding photography is a fairly new sub genre on the rise. Couples that tend to seek out creative wedding photographers are usually captivated by images that are distinct and unique. Their approach can be a blend of photojournalistic as well as editorial. Creative wedding photographers rely highly on interesting composition, foreground elements and unusual techniques to give their images a different feel.
Catherine and I enjoy to move in and out of all of these different sub genres of wedding photography styles in order to align with our couples vision but if we had to classify ourselves we would say creative/lifestyle
Tip #2
Budget
Do your research to determine the quality of work that you desire then look at about 5 different photographers in your local area that match that quality to see what price range they are in. Get an average. That’s your budget. You can scale this higher or lower depending on how much of a priority that style is to you or not. This leads us to #3 on our list.
Tip# 3
Determine Priorities
How high is photography on your ranking of most important things about your day? Hopefully it’s top 3 on your list because your images are a legacy that will live long beyond the day. Your wedding photos are the things that will remain after the cake has been eaten, the guest have left, and the memories are faded. Wedding photography is a time machine flooding your mind, thoughts and emotions back to an incredible time.
Tip# 4
“Full gallery please..”
See full gallery.
Make sure you see a photographers full gallery before you make a decision. Highlights and Instagram post don’t show the full picture of the day. Are they interested in details? How do they take group shots? Does their formals look stiff and forced. These details matter.
Tip# 5
Get the details
Make sure you are happy with how your photographer delivers their final product. Would you like an album, if so make sure you communicate this to see if they offer albums. Whether you want your images delivered digitally with high-resolution files for printing or delivered on a thumb drive find out exactly what the process is and make sure you’re OK with it.
Tip# 6
“ I don’t like him but he takes great photos”
Like your photographer!

Make sure you and your photographer’s personality mesh well 🙌🏽 Catherine and I have been fortunate enough to photograph tons of weddings over the years and we specifically designed our business with our friends in mind, yes you read that right we consider our couples friends. We believe in creating a connection that allows us to feel like guest at your wedding because we are. We believe that our art is influenced by our connections and we put a strong emphasis on forging these connections before the big day.
No matter who you choose to be your photographer make sure that you’re happy with your choice. One of the worst things that you can do is to look back at your images and be totally unsatisfied with the “walmart photographers” results.
